Job Description

The Engineering Technician VI will provide support to a US Navy organization relating to fleet support and analysis in engineering and logistics. Support includes independently planning and accomplishing complete projects or studies of broad scope and complexity. Complexity of assignments requires considerable creativity and judgement to devise approaches to accomplish work, resolve design and operational problems, and make decisions in situations where standard engineering methods, procedures, and techniques may not be applicable.

  • Prepares designs and specifications for various complex equipment and systems.
  • Plans approach to solve design problems; conceives and recommends new design techniques; resolves design problems with contract personnel, and assures compatibility of design with other parts of the system.
  • Designs and coordinates test set-ups and experiments to prove or disprove the feasibility of preliminary design; uses untried and untested measurement techniques; and improves the performance of the equipment. May advise equipment users on redesign to solve unique operational deficiencies.
  • Plans approach and conducts various experiments to develop equipment or systems characterized by (a) difficult performance requirements because of conflicting attributes such as versatility, size, and ease of operation; or (b) unusual combination of techniques or components.
  • Provide system performance anomalies support by supervising evaluation of technical analysis of system performance data.
  • Lead root cause analyses on failures of system components addressing logistics, price quotes, failure analyses reports, and funding allocations. Prepare technical reports summarizing findings and recommending way forward.
  • Lead technical analyses of maintenance procedures and changes for improvement.

An active SECRET clearance is required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Associates level degree in an Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Engineering Technology, Physics, or Mathematics discipline.
  • 5 years of work related experience in electrical/electronic systems required, including independently planning and executing projects and studies of broad scope and complexity to completion;
  • Experience shall include resolving design and/or operational problems, solving problems where standard engineering methods, procedures, and techniques may not be applicable, and supervising a team of engineers and/or engineering technicians to solve complex technical and/or policy matters;
  • Experience shall include preparation of designs and specifications for complex equipment or systems, ensuring component compatibility, and coordinating and executing tests to validate designs and system performance;
  • Uniformed, cilvian, and/or contractor experience with the US Navy and Naval Undersea Warare Center (NUWC) Division Newport is required.
