Job Description

To further support the U.S. Coast Guard, THOR has an opening for a Marine Engineer – Mechanical / Propulsion.  In support of U.S Coast Guard Headquarters this position will execute and manage the following tasks required to provide engineering and technical support in studying, analyzing, and evaluating designs for U.S. Coast Guard Ship Design Team (CG-459) and/or Surface Forces Logistics Center Engineering Services Division (SFLC ESD):

  • Provide specific support in the area of design and review of propulsion systems.
  • Provide support to the SDT in review and technical assessment of Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) contract deliverables in the technical disciplines described above. Support SDT’s efforts to provide accurate and timely deliverable review, meeting OPC Project objectives.
  • Support the government in developing technical responses to contractor’s questions. Support also includes updating the OPC System Specification, SOW, Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs), and Indicative Design to adjudicate issues.
  • Provide subject matter expert specification support to the government in developing technical responses to Program Office questions, issues or other concerns. Support also includes updating the OPC System Specification, SOW, CDRLs, and Indicative Design to adjudicate these issues.
  • Support development of USCG Polar Technical Standards through engagement with industry and government sources and activities into icebreaker design standards and technology in the areas such as; hull form, powering and resistance, structures, stability, seakeeping, maneuvering, environmental compliance, habitability or as directed by the COR. Identify pertinent International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) code regulation and develop recommendations for modification to USCG application for Polar Icebreaker (PIB).
  • Provide technical support to assist the government in development of the PIB System Specification, which includes individual Specification Sections, Project Peculiar Documents (PPDs) and classification society inputs.  System Specification shall be updated based on adjudicated Industry comments as well as internally directed changes.  Also, support any internal integration reviews of the System Specification.

Security Clearance Requirement

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET Clearance.


  • A Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering plus three (3) to ten (10) years of relevant experience
  • A minimum of at least one (1) year demonstrated experience with shipbuilding acquisitions
  • A minimum of at least one (1) year demonstrated experience supporting a major system acquisition program (DHS/USCG Level I, DoD ACAT I or equivalent)
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication and presentation skills;
  • Sound business ethics, including the protection of proprietary, confidential and classified information.
  • Team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and/or Access)
  • Anticipated travel requirement: Less than 10 percent
