Job Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking Naval Architect in support of the Southwest Regional Maintenance Center. This position will provide technical support to engineering and design staff in a variety of naval engineering design tasks in the installation, maintenance, repair and construction of diverse HM&E systems in accordance with engineering specifications. This includes:

  • Support Structural assessment for Tanks & Voids & Spaces, Superstructures, and Hull Preservation assessments including:
    • Verify tanks, voids, and spaces are gas free and tagged out for entry prior to entering tank/space for assessment.
    • Assess and identify the condition of the structure in accordance with NSTM CH. 100.
    • Gauge thickness where structural thickness loss is observed and other means of NDT as applicable to the structural condition to allow for adequate assessment. Thickness gauging must be taken in sufficient quantity and density to adequately map the identified corrosion and to allow for engineering analysis.
    • Document defects or damage including, but not limited to, active corrosion, pitting, hard and/or loose scale, thickness wastage, cracking, weld fracture, buckling, deformation, fatigue, material defects, poor workmanship and other signs of deterioration including wear and tear. Results of the inspections must be documented per section NSTM CH. 100-2.5.2.
  • Must be able to obtain  the following Certifications:
    • Naval Architects, Structural Engineers, Surveyors with structural engineering experience, or other agents as designated by NAVSEA or NAVSEA approved technical representatives
    • S-CAT certification
    • NBPI and NACE LEVEL 1 certification
    • SYCP certification
    • CPR certification
    • NAVSEA Cableway training
    • NACE Cathodic Protection (CP1) certification
    • Fall Protection requirements including Safety Harness training and maintain good working condition of Safety Harness.
  • Must be able to qualify as a certified personnel to perform NDT with certified NDT equipment in accordance with NAVSEA Technical Publication T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 and also:
    • Perform UT on hull structural elements, per UT inspection procedures in accordance with NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, Paragraph (6) and MIL-STD-1689A (SH), Paragraph (6.7) and (6.8), by a certified UT inspector per MIL-STD-1689A (SH), Paragraph (4).
    • Provide UT inspection results and reports per NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, Paragraph (6) and MIL-STD-1689A (SH), Paragraph (6.7) and (6.8).
    • Utilize GFE UT equipment per NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271, Paragraph (6) and MIL-STD-1689A (SH), Paragraph (6.7) and (6.8).
  • Provide SURFMEPP, Maintenance Team, and SWRMC Naval Architecture Department photographs and discrepancy reports of spaces and tanks.
  • Provide written assessment reports with required supporting documents and recommendations per Branch assessment report format mandated by JFMM.
  • Provide engineering solutions with respect to corrosion, coating, and structural coating issues in accordance with CCAMM in condition found by way of ESR or NMD.
  • Provide engineering adjudication with respect to corrosion, coating, and structural coating issues in accordance with CCAMM in condition found by way of DFS to SWRMC LTA, CHENG, and NAVSEA TWH.
  • Report shipboard non-conformances regardless of origin.
  • Provide objective evidences per CCAMM or supporting documents as OQE to SWRMC CHENG or NAVSEA TWH as mandated for risk mitigation.
  • Provide work status update, charges, daily housekeeping on assigned job, and timekeeping in TAAS-Info.
  • Enter and update daily all high visibility Availability or Structural issues/concerns on Eight O’clock Report (8 O’clock).

Job Requirements

Security Clearance Requirement:

  • This position requires an active Secret Clearance.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A Naval Architecture or Civil Engineering Degree
  • Excellent communications and analytical skills; working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs
  • Can investigate, troubleshoot, and design solutions to problems with regards to Naval Vessel Structures
  • Ability to physically go on board ships, climb ladders, descend into enclosed spaces
  • Ability to maintain a Secret Level Clearance

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 2+ Years of experience with Naval Ships
  • Ultrasonic Testing Experience
  • Non Destructive Testing Experience
  • Shipboard Corrosion Experience
